Collage Art Journal: Pages 20-21

For today’s collage art journal share, I tried something new for the first time with one of my collages.

I got the above images from a sports magazine article about the arrival of the Giants baseball team from New York to San Francisco in 1958.  I thought the image of Willie Mays sitting in the open car would be perfect paired with the image of the old ballpark, Seals Stadium.  I liked the images together, but wasn’t sure if the combined black and white effect would be that successful without any additional color.  When I posted it on Instagram, it proved to be very popular, so I guess I made the right decision :0)

I had this image of a seated Keira Knightley and got the idea to place her in an outdoor setting.  I really liked the garden scene, so I decided to pair up the images.  I also had this deer postcard in which the deer was crouched in some grass.  I thought it would look perfect nestled among the greenery in front of the garden.  I wanted the image of the actress to go behind the greenery also.  In order to stick the woman and deer behind the bush, I had to carefully cut out the latter all the way across before gluing it back into place after gluing down the woman and the deer.

To add a bit more color to the mass of green, I glued a couple of images of embroidered red poppies onto the bush.

To bring a bit more attention to the top of the collage, I decided to stick a colorful flower in Keira’s hair and add a hummingbird.

The hummingbird’s original colors were a bit muted.  In order to make them pop, I went over the colors with some oil pastel crayons.

As in a previous collage, I used too much glue.  As a result, a part of one arm and hand discolored when I wiped the excess glue off with a damp sponge.

Trust me, I have gotten a lot better with my gluing, once I figured out the root of the problem!

That’s it for today.  See you next time!
