Collage Art Journal: Pages 26-27

The inspiration for the first of today’s collage show-and-tell was actually the black and white image of cheering fans from my secondhand Vanity Fair book on the Oscars.  I decided to juxtapose it with a contemporary image of a glamorous woman.  The best image I had on hand was the one you see of the woman in shades.  I probably should have waited until I had a better image, but oh well.  You make do with what you have, right?  Although I would have liked her to have been wearing a more showstopping dress, at least her pose is kind of haughty, like a star who’s all-too-familiar with the spotlight.

I felt just the two images together didn’t quite mesh, so I decided to add the purple flowers in front to make the collage look a bit more cohesive as a whole.  Eh, not sure if I was really successful.

As the above collage demonstrates, I’ve been allowing myself to make less than perfect decisions when it comes to my collage art.  I decided to do this to free myself up creatively and give myself permission to make mistakes and experiment.  It’s been surprising, showing my work on Instagram, to see what is popular and what’s less so.  Some of my collages that I think would be wildly popular aren’t quite so, while some of my least favorite works have proved to be surprisingly popular.  You just never know how things will be received, so it never hurts to take chances :0)

I originally was going to use the image of the kneeling lady in another collage, but decided to go in another direction with another image.  I’m glad I did because she looks better in this garden setting.  The lady is from an ad for I-don’t-remember-what, but those spiky light globes surrounding her were so intriguing, that they kind of reminded me of flowers.

It wasn’t until I decided to name this collage Garden Nymph, that I realized I should have put some wings on her back.  I’ve seen so many collages with butterfly wings on women (and flowers in their hair), that I felt the idea was overdone, but in this case, my nymph could have used a pair!

Of the two collages today, I prefer the latter one by far.  What about you?  Which one do you prefer?
