When I was working at my regular corporate job, one of the things I would splurge on was body care products, especially all natural scrubs and body butters. When I started trimming back on my expenses, I eliminated a lot of these expensive products to save money. Well I’ve since found a local store that sells pure, unrefined African shea butter inexpensively, and more recently, I started making my own sugar body scrub. I had been looking for a simple, basic recipe with all natural ingredients for awhile when I came across a recipe for a salt scrub on the LiveWell Network. I decided to replace the salt with sugar, and that is how my sugar body scrub was born.
This recipe has just four ingredients – sugar, aloe vera gel, coconut oil, and honey.
To make it, mix and combine 2 cups sugar, 1/4 cup * aloe vera gel, 1/2 cup melted or partially melted coconut oil, and 2 tablespoons honey. (I love the smell of this scrub as it is, but If you’d like to add scent, add 10 to 15 drops of your favorite essential oil). You can use organic sugar, but I find the granules to be less uniform in size and therefore rougher in texture, so I use regular granulated sugar. I make sure to buy my aloe vera gel from a natural foods store because it tends to have less junk in it than the ones you find in regular drug stores.
Mix all the ingredients well. Pour the scrub into a clean container. I like to recycle old plastic containers for this purpose.
I especially love this body scrub because it’s less oily and crumbly than others I’ve tried. The aloe vera gel helps to loosen up its consistency, making it easier to spread on your skin. Plus, I find the gel to be soothing on my sensitive skin. It’s one of those ingredients that has come back into vogue after many years out of the spotlight. The coconut oil adds a nice, softer texture than other types of solid fats, like cocoa or shea butter.
Due to the combination of both water and oil based ingredients, you may find the scrub separating a bit during storage. Just stir it to recombine the ingredients.
I love this sugar scrub so much, I’m planning on making some to give as gifts.
* Note: The original recipe called for 1/2 cup aloe vera gel, but I’ve found after making several batches, that 1/4 cup gives the scrub a consistency that’s not so loose, especially if you happen to get water into it while in the shower.
